Andalucía is one of those regions that offer a unique blend of history, gastronomy, nature, and culture. And to no one’s surprise once you start discovering all that this part of Spain has to offer you will fall in love. So, for this reason, we wanted to share the best motorhome areas in Andalucía. So that once the mobility restrictions allow us, we can continue to enjoy the beauty of Andalucía with our motorhomes.

1. MOTORHOME AREA IN CHIPIONA (CÁDIZ)

The province of Cádiz is one of our favourites, which is why we start with the motorhome area of Chipiona. A beautiful fishing village, that has one of the best monument legacies in the region. If you decide to stop in the area you will be able to visit the 17th-century castle, the church of Nuestra Señora de la O, or the chapel of Cristo de la Misericordia. However, if you ask any local about their biggest treasure, for sure they will tell you that it is their lighthouse.

To be able to discover this beautiful village and its surroundings, you can make use of the local motorhome area. Which has a total of 63 parking spots, and the overnight stay fee is 9.55 € per day, plus 3 euros for the water change.

GPS COORDINATES: N 36º 44′ 41» / W 06º 25′ 36»

2. MOTORHOME AREA IN AYAMONTE (HUELVA)

The next stop in our journey is the locality of Ayamonte. A city bordering Portugal and situated on the banks of the Guadiana river. In here the visitor will be welcomed by the traditional white houses of the local fishermen, the ruins of a Roman castle, the 16th-century churches of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias and San Francisco, and the beautiful houses of the “indianos”.

The motorhome area of Ayamonte is the perfect alternative since it has a total of 27 parking spots, and a fee of 9.55 € per overnight stay, and 3€ per water change. One of the advantages of the area is its proximity to the city center and the fact that it is the perfect starting point for a day trip to the Natural Park of Doñana or la Sierra de Aracena.

GPS COORDINATES: N 37º 12′ 38» / W 07º 24′ 23»

3. MOTORHOME AREA IN ALHAMA (GRANADA)

When we visit the region of Granada it is easy to get caught in the beauty that Granada city offers and stop here. However, the region offers way more to the visitors that decide to explore the less known town and villages. A perfect example of this is the village of Alhama, which has been a well-known spot for its hot springs since Roman times. In addition to being able to enjoy its thermal baths, the visitor can enjoy the perfect blend of culture that has left their mark in this territory. From Romans, araba, and jews this little town of white houses has everything to enjoy a little getaway in the rural side of the region of Granada.

The best thing about this is the fact that Alhama has a motorhome area with a total of 12 parking spots, and it is free of use, with a maximum authorized stay is 48 hours.

GPS COORDINATES: N 37º 0-0′ 19» / W 03º 59′ 14′

4. MOTORHOME AREA IN ALMERIMAR (ALMERÍA)

If you want to enjoy some white sandy beaches and good weather all year round, the town of Almerimar is perfect. Located merely 3 km away from El Ejido, and one step away from the Natural Park of Punta Entinas-Sabinas. The visitor will be able to enjoy the calm environment of the city with the cultural, historical, and natural alternatives its surroundings offer.

If you finally decide to visit the city, you can use the motorhome area that is located in the port. The area has 40 parking slots and an overnight fee of 10 €, if you decide to include electricity and a water change the fee will be 15 € per day. If you want to make use of the area you need first to notify the control tower.

GPS COORDINATES: N 36º 41′ 51» / W 02º 47′ 37»

5. MOTORHOME AREA IN VÉLEZ RUBIO (ALMERÍA)

We end this first part of the best motorhome areas in Andalucía with the town of Vélez Rubio. So, if you want to discover Almería and be able to enjoy some of its nature? Them Vélez Rubio is the best option. Located in the Natural Park of La Sierra de María, this village has been inhabited by several civilizations through the centuries. So among the hiking activities that you can carry out, we recommend visiting some of its archeological sites, and the castle of Los Fajardo.

The best way of discovering this village is by making use of the area that has a total of 5 spots, and a fee of 5€ per overnight stay. If you plan to visit the region during the first days of August, you should be aware that due to the “local fiestas” the motorhome area is occupied by the fairground workers.

GPS COORDINATES: N 37º 39′ 07» / W 02º 04′ 29»

Lagos de Covadonga (Asturias)

If you are looking for some outdoor activities while enjoying incredible landscapes Covadonga’s lakes are the perfect alternative. By staying in the motorhome area of El Llerau in Cangas de Onís, you will be able to combine the amazing views that this part of the Asturian mountains offers with some of its best gastronomy, and traditions.

By visiting Debod’s Temple you will be immediately transported to another time and place. So, if you are in the area and want to fantasize about being able to travel, and discover exciting cultures, and places Debod’s Temple is the perfect option for a romantic evening.

GPS COORDINATES:

The garden in the square of Santa Cruz (Sevilla)

If you are looking for a date on which you can experience the blend of cultures and traditions that Spain has to offer, then the old Jewish quarter of Sevilla is perfect. We particularly recommend the little garden that is located in the square of La Santa Cruz. In here you will not only be surrounded by orange trees but also, you will have the possibility of going to one of the shows that the “tablao flamenco Los Gallos” offers.

GPS COORDINATES:

37.36667 / -5.9975
N 37º 22′ 0» / W 5º 59′ 51»

Teruel

Have you ever heard of “Los Amantes de Teruel”? The Lovers of Teruel is a romance story that allegedly took place in 1927 in the city of Teruel, and tells the story of two lovers who were separated by a tragic fate. Even though this truly a sad legend, the city of Teruel with its blend of Mudejar architecture, traditional gastronomy, calmness, offers the perfect scenery for enjoying a special date.

For visiting Teruel we recommend spending the night in the parking of the police station which is free of use.

GPS COORDINATES:

40.33194 / -1.09278
N 40º 19′ 55» / W 1º 5′ 34»

Park Güell (Barcelona)

There is no doubt that Barcelona will not be the same city without Gaudi. So, if you want to pay tribute to this Spanish architect while enjoying some of the best views of Barcelona, there is no better place than Park Güell.

One of the options for visiting Barcelona with your motorhome is the parking of the Pueblo Español, which has a fee of 30 € per night, and 24h surveillance.

GPS COORDINATES:

41.3674 / 2.14675
N 41º 22′ 2,65» / E 2º 8′ 48,3»

Cerro del Socorro viewpoint (Cuenca)

Cuenca is one of those cities that leave a profound impression on its visitors. In here nature and traditional architecture get together creating a city that has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996.

For visiting the city, you can make use of the auditorium park, the best thing is that is located in the middle of the historic town of Cuenca.

GPS COORDINATES:

40.07639 / -2.12917
N 40º 4′ 35» / W 2º 7′ 45»

CaliSto and Melibea’s garden (Salamanca)

If early in the post we talked about Los Amantes de Teruel, it is only fitting to end today’s list with another Spanish love story. In this case, we are talking about the tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea which is Spain is known as La Celestina. The incredible conservation state of the city of Salamanca, allows us to visit the old garden in which according to the story the two lovers forged their love story. So, what a better way on spending Valentine’s day than here.

The city of Salamanca has several areas to spend the night in. however, we recommend the parking of la Santísima Trinidad, which has a total of 6 parking spots, is free and has amazing views of the city.

GPS COORDINATES:

40.95472 / -5.66778
N 40º 57′ 17» / W 5º 40′ 4»

As you can see Spain is full of little places in which either the love stories of the past or the incredible architecture of the place, will make that you spend a Valentine’s Day full of love. However, if due to the current mobility restrictions you are unavailable to visit these locations, you can always save them for the next special occasion. Finally, Vicente Velasco Insurance Brokerage we always want to know your thoughts on the matter, so let us know your comments or recommendation. Until the next post, enjoy your Valentine’s Day and stay safe!

Ley de Costas and motorhomes

There are plenty of things that we love about the motorhome lifestyle. However, spending the night by the sea, with the sound of the waves, a starry sky, and enjoying a sunrise full of blue and orange tones is one of the best. But since the Ley de Costas can be a little bit confusing, many of us still don’t know what is allowed and what not. So, if you want to finally know for sure keep reading this post.

Historical background

The law 22/1988 had the clear objective of guaranteeing the public use of the seashore and preserve its natural environment. However, since the use of motorhomes in Spain during this time was only residual, the law didn’t include any specification regarding motorhomes. As time passed and the motorhome lifestyle started to grow in Spain the new regulations didn’t make any attempts to specify nor regulate the uses and practices of motorhomes next to the sea.

As a consequence of this legal and administrative neglect, we are going to answer the most usual questions regarding the Ley de Costas:

What lands does the Ley de Costas cover?

The answer to this one can be really simple and tricky at the same time. The easy answer is that the law covers all the land that is near the sea. Nevertheless, we need to specify the following:

“ The Ley de Costas affects practically all public territory that is near the sea, such as the shoreline, the estuaries, as well as their accessions; marshes, lagoons, marshes, estuaries, and in general any lowlands that are flooded as a result of the flow of tides, waves or seepage of seawater; cliffs; the islets in internal waters and territorial sea; works and installations for coastal lighting and maritime signaling built by the State, in addition to the land used to serve them”

What places have authorized access?

It may seem obvious but any place in which the vehicle access is authorized and there is a parking space available, we can park our motorhomes without any problems. However, the problem lies in when the local administration sets a limitation on the kind of vehicles that have access to these places.

Up to this point, everything seems clear, so you might be wondering what is the controversy about? Well according to one of the articles in the Ley de Costas, there is a strict ban on camps and camping. And even though us motorhome users clearly know the differences between parking and camping, many authorities don’t know how to differentiate between the two.

To summarize, as you have seen throughout the post the main problem is that the law doesn’t take into account the needs of this tourism and vehicles, leaving a lot of room for interpretation, which can be a problem for those that are not familiarized with the motorhome lifestyle.

Sadly, our motorhomes are a common target for thieves, and thefts occur more frequently than we would like. For this reason, everyone wants to follow the best precautions when it comes to parking and overnight stays. Therefore, on today’s post, we bring you our top tips for a safely overnight stays with your motorhome.

1. Choose wisely your overnight stay location.

When deciding where you are going to spend the night there is a multitude of options. Some of the best and most common examples are private or public motorhome areas, parkings, campsites, or the authorized areas that we can find at gas stations. Additionally, we can always make use of local parks and streets. However, we must be careful because every municipality has its own regulations for overnight stays. So, try to always be sure of the local ordinance, and in case of any doubts don’t hesitate to contact the local police or the “Guardia Civil”, by doing this you should be able to avoid any fines.

Besides these precautions the best advice is to use common sense and when possible avoid spending the night by yourself or leaving valuable objects on sight. It is always better to feel secure and go to a private area than spending the night in a sketchy place, just for the sake of not paying a few euros.

2. Alarm system.

Of course, one of the first things that comes to mind when traveling is having a good alarm, and luckily for us, there is a multitude of devices that will suit every pocket. Therefore, we recommend the following tips:

Our 25 years of experience in the motorhome sector, has told us that in the majority of cases of thefts, the alarm system of the motorhome was disconnected. So please try to avoid this at any cost.

The cabin doors are the most accessible, so try to put the most effort into protecting them.

We recommend having an acoustic alarm plus a magnetic door and window opening sensors.

Additionally, if you don’t have any pets a volumetric sensor that will detect any movements inside the vehicle is a great option.

3. Protect your motorhome doors.

When it comes to getting access to your motorhome, its doors are the easiest and most common option. This is due to the fact the usually its locks aren’t resistant enough. As a consequence, we always recommend installing security locks, like for example the HeoSystem. Another very good option is to install an exterior security lock like Safe Door, by doing so you are making it extremely difficult to open a door or window.

We know that even though we can take all the precautions in this world, the possibility of suffering a theft is going to be there. However, we can always minimize it by having common sense, avoiding any sketchy situations and locations, and of course, have good insurance coverage. If you need some advice on the latter don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. As a reminder don’ forget our tips for a safely overnight stays with your motorhome

Winter is coming, and even though mobility has been reduced, the first snows are starting to cover our roads. Despite this, many of us motorhome lovers, are still planning to enjoy every second of the remaining year with our motorhomes. However, when we are driving in worse weather conditions, some precautions must be taken into account. So, go grab a piece of paper and a pen, because today we bring you the best tips for driving in the snow.

General tips for driving in the snow with your motorhome/camper

Try to always have a full gas tank. So that in case you have to stay the night in a cold place you can turn on the heating without problems.

This one is extremely important, reduce your speed, leave a bigger security distance, and avoid any sudden movements.

Before turning on the heating, you should check that there aren’t any big amounts of snow on the roof that could be clogging the heater vent.

Tips for your holding tanks

Keep your holding tanks from freezing. Usually, the holding tanks in our motorhomes are completely exposed to the elements, and this can create a problem since they are not properly insulated. That’s why we recommend the following solutions:

Antifreeze: Pour some antifreeze in the grey and black water tanks to keep them from freezing up.

Install some heated tank pads.

When dumping your tanks, make sure that both valves are closed and also only dump when they are full.

Use the skirting method to reduce the amount of heat that will escape from your motorhome underbelly. If you are in a tight spot, you can always use snow, because eventhough it may seem extrange, but it is an amazing insulator.

When it comes to your fresh water tank, the antifreeze solution is not an option so we have the following tips: First of all, keep the tank full, since a larger quantity of water will be less likely to freeze; Second, don’t leave your water hose attached to any water connection since contents will freeze. However, if in the end you still end up with a frozen hose you can always use a hairdryer to soften them up.

Tips for snow chains

When it comes to choosing the correct snow chains you should be aware that there are several types: Spider Spike Chains, Textile Chains, and of course the traditional steel chains. Now that we have a run down through the different types of chains, we can identify which is the best alternative for us, and in this case, a key determinant is the use frequency. Because if you are going to be installing and removing your tire chains constantly, easy installation is probably a top priority for you, so keep this in mind. Additionally, if you are planning on going on a trip where winter conditions are harsh, maybe the best solution will be just using winter tires instead of snow chains.

We might be a little bit bias here, but if you visit Asturias we guarantee you that it will be love at first sight. Located on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, its territory represents the perfect mixture of mountains, spectacular beaches and cliffs, and villages full of color that seem to be frozen in time. So if you want to discover this magical part of Spain, keep reading because in this post we will tell you all the best motorhome areas in Asturias.

The best motorhome areas in Asturias

Park in Avilés

This parking area has a total of 5 spots, with a maximum authorized stay of 48 hours. One of the key advantages of this space its proximity to the historic center, only 600 meters approximately. We highly recommend visiting the Niemeyer Cultural Centre, the palaces of Camposagrado and Valdecarzana, and the church of Sabugo.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

43.55111 / -5.91389
N 43º 33′ 04» / W 05º 54′ 50»

Park in Boal

Boal received the award of Pueblo Ejemploar de Asturias in 2014, the award is given to those villages that have stood out in the defense and conservation of its natural, environmental, historical, cultural, or artistic heritage. So as you can imagine the visitor will not be disappointed. The motorhome area has a total of 5 parking spots and a maximum authorized stay of 72 hours.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park in Cangas del Narcea

If you read our previous blog post about the top ten best 2019 villages in Spain, you will remember that Cangas del Narcea was among them. So of course that this little town will be mentioned again. The free parking of this town has two spots reserved for motorhomes, however, parking on the remaining spots is also allowed.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park in Colombres

The motorhome area of Colombre is located in the parking of the hotel Casa Junco. The overnight stay and the services are free, but we recommend going to the café or restaurant as a way of thanking the owners. Apart from this we highly recommend you to visit the beach of La Franca and the prehistoric caves of El Pindal and el Indiano Museum.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park in Illano

Llano has one of the biggest motorhome parking in Asturias, with a total of 30 spots, and an enviable location to enjoy nature in its purest form.

This part of Asturias has been declared Biosphere Reserve, so its visit is a complete must when discovering Asturias. Santa Eulalia de Oscos a free parking area with 3 spots exclusively reserved for motorhomes. A total must if you decide to stop in this village is the ethnographic complex of Mazonovo.

This village of whaling origins is in our humble opinion one of the most beautiful fishing towns in Asturias, and thankfully for us, it has a parking with 20 spots and an overnight stay fee of 4 €, the water change is free.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

The noise and the stoppable rhythm of the city sometimes can be a little overwhelming. That is why making a cheeky motorhome getaway in the countryside can be the perfect option for those of us who need a little relaxation. Therefore, today we bring you the top ten villages of the contest Capital del Turismo Rural. Are you ready to discover the best rural towns in Spain?

The most beautiful villages in Spain

Park and visit Santillana del Mar (Cantabria)

First things first, Santillana del Mar was the winner of the 2019 edition, and there is no wonder why. Walking throughout its streets the tourist is immediately transported to a medieval past, this is because its old town is extremely well preserved. For instance, a perfect example is the square of Las Arenas, in here we can find the crowning jewel of La Collegiata de Santa Juliana. In addition to this main square, and not so far away one can find some gems like the Palace of Velarde, the baroque houses of Valdivieso, Villa, or Barrecha-Brancho, and even the medieval towers of Don Borja and Merino. Besides the spectacular architecture of this town, a complete must is a visit to the prehistoric site of Altamira. In conclusion, if you wan to enjoy the perfect motorhome getaway in the countryside Santillana del Mar was made for you.

Thankfully for us, Santillana del Mar has a free parking area, that is only 500 meters away from the city center.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park and visit Cangas del Narcea (Asturias)

Cangas de Narcea is one of those villages the visitors will be amazed by its spectacular landscapes and the beauty of the town, and we are not being biased. Located in the middle of the mountain, and alongside the river Narcea, this town offers a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the wonderful nature of the north of Spain. More specifically the tourist can visit the Natural Parks of Degaña, Narcea, and Ibias which is home to the largest oak tree in Spain. If on the contrary, you prefer to wander through the city, we highly recommend visiting the palaces of Pambley, Omaña, and the Condes de Toreno, also the baroque church of Santa María Magdalena, and of course the Wine Museum.

Cangas de Narcea has its own motorhome area, which is free of use. It has 2 parking spots specifically reserved for motorhomes, but you can always park on the rest of the parking.

Ver en Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park and visit Parada del Sil (Galicia)

Parada del Sil is located in the Ribera Sacra one of the most dazzling landscapes in Galicia. However, when talking about this village, nature and good views are not the only things that it has to offer. The traditional architecture and art of this region can be perfectly captured by the 9th-century Benedictine monastery of Santa Cristina or the beautiful ruins of the traditional “Castro”. Consequently, if you want to experience amazing nature, architecture, and wonderful gastronomy Parada del Sil was made for you.

If you want to spend the night here, we recommend the motorhome are of “Mesón Casa Pepe” which has 4 parking spots and it is free of use.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park and visit Setenil de las Bodegas (Andalucía)

It is hard to pick a favorite among the different villages on today’s list, but Setenil de la Bodegas is for sure on the top. The uniqueness and extreme beauty of its streets have made this little town one of the preferred tourist destinations in the Sierra de Cádiz. For those who have never visited this place, you will be amazed by how its houses are constructed under, above, inside, the rock that covers this whole village. We recommend walking through the streets of Las Cuevas del Sol o Las Cuevas de la Sombra, and also visit the medieval castle, which up to this date maintains the tower of del Homenaje and its cistern. For sure Setenil de las Bodegas will not leave you indifferent. So enjoy your motorhome getaway in the countryside of this Andalucian village.

If you finally decide to visit Setenil de las Bodegas, you can spend the night in the motorhome area of Olvera, which is only a 30 min drive far away. In here you will find 4 parking spots and a fee of 7 €, including water change and electricity.

Google Maps. GPS COORDINATES:

Park and visit Trujillo (Extremadura)

Anyone who set foot in this medieval town will be amazed. First of all, the historical-artistic complex of the old town is coronated by a beautiful Moorish castle that has been a filming location for Game of Thrones. However, a good starting point for visiting Trujillo will always be the main square, here the visitor can admire the traditional architecture of the Extremaduran countryside. As a result of this particular architectonical style, the manor house of Carvajal-Vargas or the palace Juan Pizarro de Orellana are the perfect examples. Also, some highlights of Trujillo are its narrow streets in which one can found hidden gems like the Casa del Peso Real, the balcony of Piedras Albas, or the Romanesque church of Santa María la Mayor. In conclusion, Trujillo is the perfect representation of the tradition and history of this region of Spain.

Maintenance tips for motorhomes which are going to be idle

Empty the water tank: Before storing the vehicle, make sure that there are no traces of water. By doing so you will be able to avoid any possible damage derived from humidity or frost.

Disconnect the gas and electricity whenever the motorhome is not going to be used.

Inflate the wheels properly: They should be left well inflated to support the full weight of the motorhome.

Disconnect the battery terminals: By doing so you preven them from discharging little by little during the time you are not using the motorhome.

Empty the W.C.: If you are not going to use the motorhome for a long time, it is best to empty the grey and black water tanks, and then make sure they get a thorough clean. Be doing this you will avoid any bad smells. If you have any questions regarding this topic, go check our guide about holding tanks.

Avoid humidity: Check that all windows, skylight, or smoke vents are closed to prevent water from entering. If you want to go the extra mile, we recommend getting a dehumidifier to control water condensation levels.

Anti-theft systems: This is essential if you are going to park the motorhome on the street. However, being that parking on the street is the cheapest option, but not the safest, a good alternative is to leave the vehicle in a parking/storage that is well surveilled.

Regular visits: If you decide to take anything from this post, please let this tip be the one. Because by doing monthly visits, you are going to be able to check if everything is in order, and it will take you less than 10 minutes.

Of course, the best way of making sure that your motorhome is protected is good insurance.
